Thirty years, and one thing I got wrong.
I've spent thirty years in mortgage lending. Long enough to see the market reward people who were doing nothing special, and punish people who were doing everything right, and to stop believing that either one was about the market.
I led a region closing $100,000,000 a month. That number is the part people ask about, so I'll say the honest thing about it: I got there without a mentor who had been through production at that level, and I paid for the education in the only currency I had. I almost lost what mattered most — and the lesson I took out of it wasn't that I needed to work less. It was that the sacrifice was never the price of the result. I had just assumed it was.
What actually produced the result was smaller and less dramatic than anyone wants it to be. A standard I could name, and a count of whether I hit it. Not a quarterly goal, not a good attitude — a number for today, written down before the day started, checked after it ended.
The years I spent coaching told me it wasn't just me. Almost nobody I worked with had a plan in writing, and almost nobody could tell me what they'd actually done last week. They could tell me how it felt. Feelings lag behavior by about a quarter, which is why drift is invisible while it's happening and obvious once it's expensive.
So I wrote it down. IMPACT Jumps is eighteen chapters of what I learned — why you drift without deciding to, and what has to be true before trying harder starts working. A book is a good place to put an idea. It's a terrible place to keep a standard.
